DIRK HOULT is a theatre artist and creative producer committed to bringing untold queer stories to the stage; devising collaborative works that focus our Australian experience through a tilted lens. He was born in Melbourne in 1981 and raised in Ipswich, QLD. He trained as an actor at USQ in Toowoomba (‘99-’01), spent a decade working in Brisbane, then moved to the UK. He's an actor, singer, producer, writer, director, and dramaturg, with over 20 years of industry experience. His first few years back in Melbourne were spent on the vaudeville stage; performing in, then eventually writing for, producing and directing nights of circus, burlesque, comedy, magic, and music. In 2016  he graduated from VCA  with a masters in directing theatre. He is currently developing ideas around the next verbatim project. Dirk most recently directed THE BLAZING SON as part of the 2019 Explorations Season at La Mama. In 2017-18 Dirk wrote and directed WE WERE THERE (Chapel Off Chapel), offering a verbatim perspective of HIV & AIDS sharing the stories of Australian women. Burgess @ The Alex Theatre); was co-creator/director of OPRAHFICATION (Australian tour & The New York Musical Theatre Festival), THE BRASS BEAR CABARET for the Melbourne Cabaret Festival (2013), and THE BUTCHER SHOP REVIEW (2012-14). Other credits include DOWNSIDE-UP (The Judith Wright Centre), and THE WORKERS ‘LIVE!’ for Network 10. He was the assistant director on COMPANY (Watch This Inc.), THE LARAMIE PROJECT (Forward Movement), A SLIGHTLY SONDHEIM WEDDING (Joymas Creative), and DEAD CATS DON’T BOUNCE (QPAC).  In 2016 Dirk completed his MA in Directing for Live Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts. Dirk trained as an actor at the University of Southern Queensland from 1999-2001; his performance credits reflect a spectrum of theatrical practices, in both main-stage and independent productions across Australia, highlights include: ASSASSINS (Warehaus Theatre), ROAD MOVIE (Self-produced), BEHIND THE CANE (Queensland Music Festival), THE UGLY ONE (23rd Productions), THE 5-WAYS (Brisbane Festival), THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE (Oscar Theatre Company), THE BUGALUGS BUM THEIF (Monkey Baa / QLD Arts Council), and THE KURSK (Matrix Theatre, Metro Arts & Critical Stages) which toured nationally in 2009 and was nominated for a Helpmann Award the following year. He made his feature film debut in the schoolie movie, BLURRED (2002) and can be seen in episodes of SEA PATROL, REEF DOCTORS, and numerous short films
